New rules for traveling in the Schengen Zone from 2024

The Schengen Zone, known for its border-free travel within participating European countries, is implementing new regulations starting in 2024. These regulations will require travellers from countries that currently have a free visa to this zone to obtain a travel authorization called ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorisation System). The ETIAS system aims to enhance border control and surveillance while maintaining the convenience of visa-free travel for eligible individuals.

ETIAS will be applicable to nationals of more than 50 countries that currently enjoy a visa-free stay of up to 90 days within a 180-day period in the Schengen zone. This authorization will allow them to enter the Schengen Zone without the need to apply for a visa at a consulate. The application process for ETIAS is straightforward and can be completed online via the official website: https://www.etiasvisa.com/etias-form-application.

To complete the ETIAS application, travellers will need to provide various personal details. This includes their full name, date and place of birth, nationality, home address, parents' first names, email address, and phone number. Additionally, applicants must provide details about their travel document, level of education, current occupation, intended travel and stay within the Schengen area, any criminal convictions, past travels to war or conflict zones, and whether they have recently been subject to a decision requiring them to leave any country's territory.

Once the application form is submitted correctly, it will be approved within minutes. However, in cases where further document verification is necessary, the ETIAS application process may take anywhere from four days to a maximum of two weeks.

The application fee for ETIAS is 7 EUR, and once approved, it remains valid for three years or until the expiration date of the passport, whichever comes first.

It is important to note that ETIAS is not a visa but rather a travel authorization for a specific group of countries. The list of countries eligible for ETIAS can be found on the official website mentioned above. The rules for countries that require a visa to enter the Schengen area will remain unchanged, and travellers from those countries must continue to apply for a visa at the nearest consulate in their place of residence.
